On November 2, 2010 Kalikova & Associates Partner, Aicholpon Jorupbekova took part in Annual Fall Conference of Internal Law Section of American Bar Association, where K&A and partner law firms from CIS Leading Counsel Network made a presentation on doing business in their respective countries and presented “Anti-corruption regulation in the CIS countries” brochure prepared jointly by the LCN firms. The event was attended by representatives of various law firms, in-house lawyers, and other members of ABA.

On November 3, 2010 Kalikova & Associates Partner, Aicholpon Jorupbekova jointly with the managing partners of leading national law firms from CIS Leading Counsel Network made a presentation on how to do business with the governments and state owned companies in former USSR countries for French-based companies interested in CIS economic region.

On October 30, 2010, in Bishkek, Kalikova & Associates Managing Partner Gulnara Kalikova and Partner Ulan Tilenbaev took part in the first Kyrgyz Japan Symposium on investment encouragement and development of bilateral relations. The Symposium was attended by the representatives of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Japan leading companies, such as Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Toyota Motor Corporation and Tokyo Rope MFG, which plan to enter Kyrgyz market.

One of the key areas of Kalikova & Associates practice is development and promotion of Public-Private Partnership in Kyrgyzstan. Within the work on this area, Kalikova & Associates lawyer Murat Madykov took an active part in the 6th Annual PPP in CEE and SEE Conference held on October 20-22, 2010 in Vienna, Austria. The conference was organized by Jacob Fleming Group. 130 delegates and speakers, including governmental and municipal representatives, construction companies, contractors, concessionaries, institutional investors, financial and technical advisers, law firms and consultants, attended the event. During the conference our lawyer enjoyed the opportunity to explore the European experience in PPP projects in such industries as motorways, railways, construction and operation of airports, education, healthcare, environmental and others.

In 2010, Kalikova & Associates sponsored the national competition SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise) in the Kyrgyz Republic, and sponsored the participation of the SIFE team, champion of the Kyrgyz Republic, in the world cup SIFE, which was held on October 9-11, 2010 in Anaheim, USA. Kalikova & Associates lawyer Nurbek Sabirov took part in the world cup SIFE 2010 as a business watcher.

It has become a tradition for Kalikova & Associates Law Firm to carry out its annual Scholarship Program which is aimed at providing support for new generation of talented lawyers. 3 finalists will receive a money reward of 10,000 soms each and an opportunity to undergo up to 3 months of internship at Kalikova & Associates.

 

Eligibility requirements: Full-time 3-5th year students enrolled in law department of universities of the Kyrgyz Republic.

Application documents: Curriculum Vitae; Copy of the transcript (most recent); and Legal article.

In the article, applicants shall identify one or more problematic issues (legislative gaps, loopholes etc.), provide a clear explanation of the problem, its consequences in practice and propose specific solutions. The article shall be written either in English or Russian, which shall not exceed 8 pages (Times New Roman, 12, single space). Besides, the article shall be original and earlier unpublished. Articles in English will be given a preference.

Applicants are free to write on any topic within business law. Below is a list of proposed topics:
- Mineral resources rights in the Kyrgyz Republic;
- Regulation of electricity tariffs in the Kyrgyz Republic;
- Protection of intellectual property rights in the Kyrgyz Republic;
- Taxation in the Kyrgyz Republic;
- Secured transactions in the Kyrgyz Republic;
- Issues of Corporate Governance in the Kyrgyz Republic;
- Capital (Securities) Market of the Kyrgyz Republic;
- Introduction of mandatory insurances in the Kyrgyz Republic;
- Other topics.

Successful applicants shall be able to demonstrate:
- Academic excellence;
- Desire to pursue legal career;
- Strong theoretical knowledge, writing and analytical skills;
- Knowledge of legislation applicable to chosen topic.

Selection Procedure: Application submission deadline is 5 pm October 20, 2010. Application documents shall be sent via email (with a subject line “K&A Scholarship 2010”). Applications will be reviewed and shortlisted candidates will be informed about interview dates by November 1, 2010. Final decision will be made by November 10, 2010. Dates and terms of internship at Kalikova & Associates will be separately agreed with the scholarship recipients.
