Kalikova & Associates Senior Lawyer Jyldyz Tagaeva participated in the 7th session of the Regional Public-Private Dialogue (RPPD) Platform held on May 24-25 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
The event was organized by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) for public sector, mining/consulting services sector and NGO representatives from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Germany. The participants shared experience and news in extractive industries, in particular:
- the enabling legal environment for investment in the extractive industries;
- improving the legal environment for extractive industries;
- transparent and efficient agreements;
- environmental and social performance standards for permitted extractive industry operations.
In the framework of this discussion, Jyldyz Tagaeva reported on Kalikova & Associates’ input in the development of the medium and long-term mining strategy and reforming the legal environment for extractive industries in the Kyrgyz Republic.
On May 24, 2016 Kalikova & Associates will participate in the Central Asian Franchising Expo 2016. The organizers of the exhibition are the Investment company East Star Capital with support from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Investment Promotion Agency under the Ministry of Economy of the Kyrgyz Republic.
According to Kalikova & Associates Managing partner Ulan Tilenbaev, the upcoming event should be interesting for the representatives of business community, at least as general information, since such event is new for Kyrgyzstan. According to the organizers of Expo there will be announced 25 franchises of major foreign brands that are ready to enter our market. The practice indicates the growth of potential for franchises and entrepreneurs’ interest in investing in ready-made business projects encouraged by successful examples in the market. In our view, such kind of events can be a good platform for communication and discussion of further cooperation with representatives of different companies and finding new business partners”.
Kalikova & Associates lawyers will present a small workshop on “Legal aspects of franchising” during which the interested persons will have an opportunity to obtain information on franchising and its development in the Kyrgyz Republic.
The 5th Annual Ak Ilbirs National Film Award ceremony took place at Manas cinema theater on May 13, 2016. The awarding ceremony took place after the demonstration of films shot in 2015 and nominated in 2016. The demonstration of nominated films was held at Chingiz Aitmatov Cinema House in early May. The jury included the members of the Union of Cinematographers of the Kyrgyz Republic. Based on the voting results, Sutak, a film directed by Mirlan Abdykalykov, was announced as the best film of 2015. It previously won Nika Film Award of the Russian Academy of Cinema Arts in the category "Best Film of CIS and Baltic countries."
Home for Mermaids, Uzbekistan, won Ak Ilbirs award in the category “The best film in Central Asia”. The prize for an outstanding contribution to the National Cinematography was awarded to cameramen, Mr. Nurtai Barbiev, the People’s Artist of the Kyrgyz Republic. The prize for an outstanding contribution to the World cinema was awarded to Mrs.Natalia Arinbasarova, the Honored Artist of the RSFSR, the USSR State Prize laureate and a holder of Volpi gold cup at the 26th Venice International Film Festival.
On April 28, 2016 Ulan Tilenbaev, Managing partner, participated in the Meeting of the Turkic Council which was held within the framework of the 4th business forum.
Participants at the business forum included representatives of the companies from various sectors of economy in particular, mining, tourism and energy industries. Among the guests of the business forum were the representatives of the public and private sector and business community of Azerbaijan, Turkey and Kazakhstan.
The business forum discussed possible cooperation options between the friendly countries and the broadening of trade and economic relations.
«Business against corruption: modern challenges and tendencies» international anticorruption conference took place in Bishkek last week. The conference was organized by the BizExpert Analytical Center along with the National Alliance of Business Associations (NABA) with support from the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ). Kalikova & Associates law firm was represented by Ulan Tilenbaev, Managing Partner.
The main goal of the conference was to attract public attention to the problems of corruption, to discuss existing anticorruption tendencies and mechanisms and to share successful experiences in carrying out anticorruption initiatives. The conference also discussed anticorruption compliance mechanisms for business sector widely used in Europe and USA and helping companies to identify and manage the risks of corruption. Speaking about anticorruption compliance mechanisms, Ulan Tilenbaev noted that their introduction can positively affect foreign investor perceptions of the local business climate. He added that the anticorruption compliance mechanisms should be used by all businessmen who value their businesses and want to go further, all the more so as such mechanisms are not prohibited in the Kyrgyz Republic.

The meeting was organized by the International Business Council and was held on March 31, 2016 in Hyatt.
On March 24 Kalikova and Associates law firm introduced its first issue of a newsletter in taxation and customs issues. The newsletter includes the news of the industry and legislation of the Kyrgyz Republic on taxation and customs issues in Russian and English languages, and will be issued bimonthly.
